Penile Implants Q & A

What is a penile implant?

A penile implant is a surgically inserted device that helps men with erectile dysfunction regain their ability to get an erection. Although there are two types of penile implants (semi-rigid and inflatable), inflatable implants are the most common and effective.

While the team at Urology Specialist Group offers the two-piece inflatable implants, the recommended option is the three-piece inflatable penile implant. The three-piece implant is composed of two inflatable cylinders implanted inside the penis and a pump and release valve inside the scrotum that controls a fluid-filled reservoir implanted under the abdominal wall. The larger fluid reservoir used for three-piece inflatable penile implants allow for a much firmer erection.

To operate the implant, all you have to do is pump the fluid into the two inflatable cylinders. As the fluid fills the cylinders in your penis, it allows you to achieve an erection. The erection goes down once you drain the fluid back into the reservoir using the release valve.

Three-piece inflatable penile implants are preferred because they offer the most natural-looking results compared to other implant types.

How is the procedure performed?

Your doctor at Urology Specialist Group performs the procedure by placing the inflatable cylinders in the areas of your penis that would typically fill with blood to cause an erection. All implants are customized to your exact needs to ensure proper function and comfort.

Next, your doctor implants the pump and valve into your scrotum. For patients receiving the three-piece inflatable penile implant, an internal incision is made to insert the fluid reservoir. The procedure is usually performed in less than an hour.

Are penile implants painful?

Penile implants do cause some discomfort after the procedure. Generally, aftercare involves pain medication and reduced activity. Most men can return to their normal activities after four to six weeks. Once you’ve begun to effectively heal, your doctor may recommend you operate your implant once or twice a day to ensure the cylinders can expand properly.
