What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam is your opportunity to voice all of your sexual and reproductive health concerns. During the evaluation, your physician conducts a number of evaluations to get a snapshot of your overall health. Some of the evaluations that can be performed during your well-woman visit include:

STD testing

You or your doctor might decide to conduct testing for a number of sexually transmitted diseases. STD testing can be performed as a blood, urine, or swab test.

Pelvic exam

A pelvic exam is an important aspect of your well-woman visit. During a pelvic exam your doctor examines the external and internal parts of your vagina to check for abnormalities. Pelvic exams often include a Pap test.

Pap test

Your doctor conducts a Pap test, also called a Pap smear, to screen for cervical cancer. They perform the test by examining a sample of your cervix tissue under a microscope. Generally, Pap tests are recommended every three years.

Breast examination

A breast exam is a physical examination of your breast and armpits that allow your doctor to feel for lumps and abnormalities.

Well-woman exams are an essential part of maintaining your health and are also the perfect opportunity to discuss family planning and birth control. The expert urologists at the Urology Specialist Group provide a number of services for helping women manage their reproductive health. They also provide treatment for infertility, vaginal rejuvenation, urinary incontinence, and pelvic floor reconstruction.
